8 years sober

The first time I talked to my therapist, I was on my last phone call. I needed to take a break from my computer and my phone and my life. It took me a minute to realize she was speaking. Her voice was a whisper on the phone and I immediately felt like a total idiot. I was so embarrassed. I had no idea what to say. She took the time to talk to me and it really made my day. Today, I am a whole different person.

I’m not even sure if I can believe that I’ve been sober for 8 years. In the past, I would just say something like, “Yes, I’m a bit of a drinker. I’m also a bit of a loner.” But really, I just don’t drink anymore. I can’t even remember the last time I did. I used to drink way to much and drive really fast.

I don’t drink, but I had been drinking for several years prior to starting the program. I stopped drinking completely after I was 20. I have done numerous studies and found alcoholism to be a highly debilitating disease. So far, I have been totally sober for 14 years and I am still drinking just as much as I was. And I am still a little crazy. I still think about all the times I drank and the memories that I have of it.

The good news is that you are not alone in your own thoughts and actions. I did a few of my own things to help me keep my sanity. I have no idea what it’s like to be on autopilot and start drinking, but I have no idea how it’s going to work.

As long as I am drinking, I am on autopilot. This is the good news.

I’m not saying your life is perfect. That’s not my point. I’m simply saying that you have found a way to keep your spirits up when you aren’t on autopilot. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible.

This is the problem with the current state of mind-relaxation. We’re basically doing it again. We’re focusing on the things that don’t matter.

In an article titled “8 years sober,” author Nick Dyer writes, “Most of us don’t have the time or the energy to take our mind off our own actions. It’s a self-limiting state. I don’t have a self-limiting state. I don’t think I have a self-limiting state.
