I was at the gym one day and I did something I’ve never done before: I took a few steps. It was pretty weird. But the results? I got out of the gym faster, my heart rate was higher, and my workout felt better.

The most interesting part is that my heart rate went up when I took a few steps, and my workout felt better because my body was getting stronger. The weird part is that the benefits from the other part of the treadmill, a set of weights, never came. It was like I was somehow being trained at the gym but not actually getting muscle strength training.

It’s like I’ve got a muscle that is super fast but I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just the way I’m walking, but this is definitely what I’m talking about when I refer to’self-awareness’ as a way to improve performance.

It’s like if you were walking up a hill, you’d be aware that you’re going to get to the top but not know what to do. But if you were a runner, you’d be aware that you were going to the top, but not know how you were going to get there. I mean, you’d know that you were going to run, but you wouldn’t know how.

It’s just how we are wired, so that we’re “aware” of these things, but we aren’t really “aware” of them. So all we’re aware of, is how we are doing. And for most of us, that’s not a pretty sight.

The problem is, how many of us are actually aware of our running? My dad is a good example. He runs a lot. He runs pretty much every day, but he doesnt actually know what he’s doing. He doesn’t think about where he’s going or why he’s going. In that sense he’s pretty much in the same category as the guy who can’t see anything past the wall in front of him.

We are in a very different league. We are running. We are aware of this. And we are aware of the fact that we may want to change our running for whatever reason.
