By I’ve seen this debate come up on the internet a few dozen times now, and I was never really sure what to say. On the one hand, I really love this species of praying mantis, and I love the fact that they have a sex that is not strictly determined by genitals. On the other hand, I don’t know why I would want to have sex with a praying mantis.
It seems that there are two camps of sex-orientation in this species. My personal favorite is the male praying mantis, and I love the fact that they get their name by being the only praying mantis that are not male and female. The female praying mantises don’t have the same sex-role, they are actually hermaphrodites. Although I’m not sure how that works.
I personally love the fact that the praying mantises (and other praying mantises) get to choose their gender. I think its really cool how much of a difference it makes. I think it just makes sense to have the choice of what sex the praying mantises are. It also makes the way males and females mate and the babies that come out a little more like fairies.
